Valle d'Aosta DOC Fumin 2024

Elegant and complex red wine from the Valle d'Aosta, north-west Italy, made from Fumin grapes. The vineyards lie at 650 metres around the tower of Aymavilles, on sloping terraces of loose moraine soils, in an Alpine climate with short, cool summers.

Fumin owes its name to the smoky-grey bloom on its berries ('fumo' is Italian for smoke). Long prized in blends for its deep colour, it was close to extinction in the 1970s until local growers rescued it. In 1993, Les Crêtes became the first to make a single-varietal Fumin, revealing a wine of great elegance with real ageing potential.

This Valle d'Aosta DOC Fumin 2024 pairs perfectly with braised meats, game and venison, polenta, goat's cheese or blue cheeses.

The Charrère family has lived in the Valle d'Aosta since 1750, and at Les Crêtes they make wine on steep mountain slopes from local grape varieties such as Fumin, which was saved from extinction in the nick of time. Today Elena and Eleonora Charrère, together with Giulio Corti, carry on the work of their father, Costantino.
