Sicilia Menfi DOC Nero d'Avola Plumbago 2023

Smooth and balanced red wine from the Menfi wine region in Sicily, southern Italy, made from Nero d'Avola grapes. The grapes come from the old vineyard around Lago Arancio, on calcareous soils between 75 and 195 metres.

Plumbago is named after the wild flower with its beautiful violet colour that grows in the woods around Planeta's old farmstead and vineyards at Ulmo – you will find it on the label. Planeta farms the vineyard organically and matures the wine for ten months in small wooden barrels (barriques) and medium-sized wooden casks (tonneaux) of French Allier oak that have been used before. This keeps the oak discreet and gives a soft, fruity Nero d'Avola with rounded tannins and instant appeal.

This Sicilia Menfi DOC Nero d'Avola Plumbago 2023 pairs perfectly with grilled or barbecued meat, even with a rich sauce, and with bollito misto (Italian boiled meats).

The Planeta family has farmed in Sicily for seventeen generations. It opened its first winery at Ulmo, near Menfi, in 1995 and now makes wine in five Sicilian territories, on land that is entirely organically farmed. Today Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta run the family estate.
